Solitude comes from a place of genuine tenderness, a “yearning to emerge from solitude, to rejoin a brighter world.” It also celebrates personal solitude as a growth element. While Arkenstone often composes in the Celtic or world music genres, here neo-classical influence is evident. Apart from Arkenstone’s piano and synth contributions, additional instrumentation includes violin, cello, and viola. The use of the Hardanger fiddle on a song with an Icelandic title suggests Scandinavian, but the music – twelve tracks over 50 minutes – seems to embrace more classical than folk. The compositions are unhurried and contain quite a lot of space; the mood is open and reflective; there is no hurrying, no bombast, no emphatic climax – only a quiet longing. Solitude works well as background music as you have time to sit with it and reflect.
